Not as obscure as Myst, but still a fun challenge with a story. The visuals are gorgeous, and I find it very enjoyable.. Makes me want to vomit after about ten seconds. Seriously, why would anyone make a VR game that has zero accomodation for players who get VR sick.[This review was written based on a previous version of Xing: The Land Beyond which did not include FOV restriction. I no longer own the game so can't review it in its current state]. Extremely disappointed because this is exactly the kind of games I like but due to a stupid no-teleport moving system it's a puke-fest for my wife an I. We both were expecting a good time and got NOTHING GOOD for the money spent!. This game was an absolute 10/10. I felt a lovely calm throughout the experience, and felt constantly rewarded. I was worried in the beginning when the puzzles seemed easy, but they got plenty challenging further along. The stories were lovely, including the ending of the main storyline. I loved collecting the little lightpools for the texts, but I would've hoped soe of them didn't contain clues. I started being afraid of opening them in case I would feel cheated to the answer to the puzzle at hand. I did encounter a bug apparently known on some hardware - I couldn't see the ice pillars. Had to check videos for their placement to be able to solve the puzzles. This is literally the only negative thing I have to say.I finished the game in roughly 13,5h, which is a very nice length for a game like Xing.I would recommend Xing to anyone that likes puzzle games, and STRONGLY recommend to anyone liking a game with feeling, like RiME!. This is the most beautifully created game I've ever played. Sometimes I just walk to a place and compose an image with the controls, as if I were to take a photo of the scene. The amount of detail and taste that went into the creation of the worlds is just staggering. This games creates the kind of awe and wonderment I had when I first played Myst. Playing "XING: The Land Beyond" is truly an experience. The puzzles aren't hard so "XING" is not the best choice for hardcore puzzle fans. They get a bit tougher towards the end, but never become very difficult. The puzzles fit in very well with the worlds and I believe it is by design that they don't hinder progress through these calm and serene worlds too much. If only "Obduction" had the incredibly good aesthetics of "XING" and had received the same level of attention, it would have been a ton more enjoyable. The art direction and accomplished designs of "XING" with a "Quern"/"Myst"/"Riven"-type puzzles would be an adventurer's dream. Note, though that the moderate puzzle difficulty shouldn't detract from the fantastic quality of "XING", which just targets a slightly different genre than full-on puzzle games. If I had to mention a tiny quibble, I'd mention the jump mechanics. I got used to them but still now and then missed a jump which can be frustrating. I noticed the jump assist option but felt that the foot markers took away some of the immersion, so I played without the assist and managed fine. I'm also a big fan of puzzles that are an integral part of the environment. "XING" handles this very well, overall, but for instance the moving blocks do not appear to make sense outside being part of an obstacle to master. I would have preferred completly natural and organically integrated puzzles, such as getting a ship to sail, using just normal materials and tools. I wholeheartedly recommend "XING". It is an astounding accomplishment in game design and an absolute joy to play. P.S.: I played without a VR headset and am grateful that this option exists. Even without a VR headset, it was a wonderful immersive experience.. Well worth the price of admision if your looking for a relaxing game thats also both awesome visually in and out of VR and enjoyable to play. If I had to have a complaint it would be the hand holding around puzzles the game nearly spoon feeds you the answers every step of the way. I was really looking for a more MYST like experiance or perhaps a combination of Myst and the Witness.One warning I would give is to those who dont like or struggle with platformer style jumping this game contains a fair amount of this type of activity and I can see it being extremely frustrating for some.. The worlds are absolutely stunning to look at and explore. The puzzles are well designed and ramp up in difficulty nicely. For the most part I really enjoyed my time in Xing.I did see a few graphical glitches where glowing elements of objects would appear through the environmental geometry. I often foiund platforming frustrating because my position in my playspace would not affect my virtual body. As a result I would walk off edges without being near them according to my perspective. This also means it's sometimes possible walk through geometry and cheat at the puzzles.
